Read how you can create, make and start your own personal finance blog; become an authority and be successful. This tutorial looks at the set-up of the site, the design concept using WordPress ready-made themes (templates) and the impact of using social media to leverage on the reach.
One of the benefits the internet is offering is the fact that you can use it to know literally anything you set out your mind to know. And running this sort of niche is made easy with this start up tutorial.
Without much ado, let me set out the steps you need to take, bitter pills you need to swallow in getting started and practical steps to launch out.
There are three models of finance blogs you can create;
- A news based finance blog
- An insightful think tank form of personal finance blog
- A combination of both the news form and the authority model merged together.
But before I begin to spell out the set up processes, there are certain facts/elements you need to know; please find below the summary of each:
- Having a clear purpose
- Investing money upfront
- Have a set objective
- Plan wisely and have long term goals
- Monetize from the on-set
General Requirements / Set up
To set up the finance blog, no matter the niche or model (listed above) you want to embrace, the same technical configuration and requirements is needed for them. They are
- The use of a perfect domain name
- Getting a webhost to host the domain name ( A WordPress based host)
- Getting appropriate WordPress themes/Website template for the design/layout
- Configuring the blog settings, the WordPress themes and required plugins
- Opening social media account in the name of the domain ( for branding advantages)
A brief explanation!!
- 1# Domain Name
A domain name is simply the name you are naming the blog. One of the requirements of a domain name is making it brandable. In other words, don’t just give your personal finance blog any name anyhow, think and come up with a short brandable, marketable and unique name.
To get started, you need to do some preliminary background check on the availability of the name you have in mind. Use the below form from Bluehost to do the check up and if the name is available (not yet taken), I recommend you pick it immediately.
- 2# Webhosting for the Domain Name
Getting the domain name is the first task; however, one of the major requirements is the hosting of the domain. This step makes the name to be available and searchable on the internet. I equally recommend the use of Bluehost.
Bluehost is cheap, reliable, and dependable and I recommend them for both the domain name and the hosting of the blog (I am using them on my own blogs, including this one you are presently reading).
Note: The total cost of starting, setting up a personal blog is in the range of USD 90-360!!
- 3# WordPress Themes /Blog Template
The overall outlook on how the blog will look like depends on the design concept used and the arrangement you want to employ. This is where the use of WordPress, Its themes and plugins comes into play.
Instead of spending thousands of dollars to a programmer or designer, the easiest and most dependable way is to get WordPress themes templates ( however, from a reliable and reputable company/organization) and install them on your blog.
Examples of WordPress themes for a personal blog includes the following:
You can get these themes from the following company (highly recommended)
After the purchase of the templates, domain name and hosting, the next step is a brief tutorial on how to configure and set it up.
- 4# Installation /Set up of the WordPress Templates
The first task is for you to search and check for the suitable design from the above company. After this, you will need to buy the theme/templates and download the ZIP file.
After the ZIP file, you will need to upload them to your dashboard either through your Bluehost cPanel account or from your WordPress dashboard. For a more comprehensive guideline on how to know about the set-up, installation and configuration, I encourage you to check and read the below technical guidelines I published some few days ago. You can read from here: WP Technical Set up and Guidelines
After the above set up, you will need to follow and implement the following:
The menu is usually at the top of the blog (in the header section); I encourage you to read the above guidelines and also watch the below video.
If you need any assistance on the above guidelines and set up configuration, simply reach out to me through the contact form.
- 5# Leverage using Social Media
I do not think any online business or blog can succeed without the use of social media, especially Facebook, twitter, Linkedin and / or Instagram.
So, the first task you need to do is to open a free social media accounts;
- For Facebook, open a business page or Facebook page for your blog using the domain name ( this is advisable because of branding purposes and advantages). For example if your domain name /name of your personal finance blog is creativeprofits.com; then your Facebook business page should be Facebook.com/creativeprofits
After opening the page, you will need to set up the page, invest money ( probably USD100 – 500) to get likes ( followers), increase your outreach, create awareness and get your first initial audiences that are interested in your niche and what you can offer.
- Embrace and do the same thing for twitter ( then later Instagram and Linkedin)–For your niche, I recommend you start with Linkedin. Follow the above process for Linkedin and grow your audience/followers
Now, this is where the real work lies;
- 6# Get Down To Business And Write Compelling Articles
Since you are the custodian of your plans, purposes and vision behind the newly established finance blog; you need to buckle up your belt, get down to serious business and publish compelling contents.
You are embracing this model if you want to run an authoritative finance blog or a think tank site based on this niche. However, if you want to run a financial news blog or website, you will still make use of the above steps but with additional settings/slight configuration of running a news focused blog.
To that effect, I recommend you check out this detailed tutorial on how to run a successful news blog and website; you can also check out the basic underlying steps you need to take if you are considering running an online newspaper blog/site
You can watch the below video on how to publish your first blog posts and set it up.
